Preface: Model investigations of the outlet works and spillway for Garrison Darn were authorized by the Chief of Engineers in second endorsements dated 1 March 1948 and 16 February 1949 to letters dated 5 February 1948 and 1 February 1949, respectively, from the Garrison District through the Missouri River Division. Model studies were conducted in the Hydraulics Division of the Waterways Experiment Station during the period October 1948 to June 1951. During the course of the model investigations Mr. J. H. Douma of the Office, Chief of Engineers, Mr. Karl Jetter of the Missouri River Division, and Messrs. R. D. Fields, H. K. Pratt, and G. A. Makela of the Garrison District visited the Experiment Station at frequent intervals to discuss results of the tests and to correlate these results with design studies. Personnel of the Experiment Station actively connected with some phase of the model studies were Messrs. F. R. Brown, T. E. Murphy, T. J. Buntin, A.H. Barnes, V. E. Johnson, Jr., J. D. Harms, N. V. Cowan, and S. B. Burns.
