Description: | Technical memorandum Preface: In 1950 an experimental relief well system was installed along the landside toe of the Mississippi River main-line levee at Trotters (Levee Mile 54), Miss., by the U. s. Army Engineer District, Memphis, to provide a facility for investigating (a) control of underseepage by means of relief wells and (b) performance of relief wells over an extended period of time. The geological features of the site, characteristics of the foundation, design of the relief well system, well installation data, and analysis of the piezometric data and well flow data obtained during the high waters of 1950 and 1951 are contained in Control of Underseepage by Relief Wells, Trotters, Miss., Waterways Experiment Station Technical Memorandum No. 3-341, April 1952. Analyses of well flow and piezometric data obtained during the 1952 high water and of data obtained from pumping tests made on selected wells in 1953 are contained in Appendices B and C, respectively, published in February 1954. Analysis and summary of piezometric and well flow data obtained during the high water of 1955 and description and analysis of pumping tests made on selected wells in February and March 1957 are contained in Appendices D and E, respectively, published in June 1957. Description and analysis of pumping tests made on selected wells in April 1959 are contained in Appendix F, published in June 1960. Analysis and summary of piezometric and well flow data obtained during the high water of 1961 and description and analysis of 1961 pumping tests made on selected wells in June 1961 are contained in Appendices G and H, respectively, published in one volume in July 1962. This report (Appendix I) presents a description of well cleaning operations conducted in 1963, a description of the current (1963) condition of the well tops, an analysis of data from water samples from the wells, and a description and an analysis of pumping tests made on selected wells in 1963 to compare the yields of these wells with those obtained after installation. The study is being conducted for the Mississippi River Commission under the general supervision of Messrs. w. J. Turnbull, w. G. Shockley, Chief and former Assistant Chief, respectively, and J. R. Compton, Soils Division, u. s. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES). The 1963 pumping tests were conducted under the supervision of Messrs. T. B. Goode and A. L. Mathews, Inspection and Exploration Section, Soils Division, WES. Laboratory tests on water samples were conducted by the Concrete Division, WES. The analysis of data contained herein was made by Messrs. W. C. Sherman and C. C. Trahan, and the report was prepared by Mr. Trahan. Director of the WES during the course of this investigation was Col. Alex G. Sutton, Jr., -CE. Technical Director was Mr. J. B. Tiffany. |
