Syllabus: This memorandum constitutes a final report of the study performed at the u. S. Waterways Experiment Station on a model of the spillway for the Great Salt Plains Dam. The model was built undistorted to the linear scale ratio, model-to-prototype, of 1 to J6. The general purpose of the model study was to check the hydraulic characteristics of the combined spillway and outlet works for Great Salt Plains Dam, and to correct any uneconomic, unsafe, or undesirable conditions which might have existed in the proposed or basic design. The results of the study indicated that advantage followed from certain revisions in the basic design. Specifically, these revisions were as follow: a. The left bank of the approach channel was raised to improve flow conditions in the channel and eliminate currents along the face of the dam. b. The baffling of the flow in each of the upper two stilling basins was accomplished with one row of baffle piers instead of two, while in the lower stilling basin; scour conditions were improved by a slight change in position and height of piers. c. The wing walls extending below the end sill of the lower basin were reduced 150 ft. in length without detriment to exit conditions.
