Description: Technical memorandum
Introduction: The stretch of the Mississippi River from Cat Island (Mile 252) to Mhoon Bend (Mile 274) is considered one of the most unstable reaches from a navigation standpoint. In the past few years, in order to maintain a navigable channel during the low-water seasons, dredging operations have been necessitated at several points throughout this reach, namely: Cat Island Bend (Miles 251-256), Bruins Crossing (Mile 258), Commerce Crossing (Mile 2063), the vicinity of Commerce bar (Miles 266-270), and Mhoon Crossing (Mile 273). Between July and October, 1932, four dikes were constructed on the right bank of the river at Cat Island in an effort to remedy the situation in that locality, but subsequent surveys made in the immediate vicinity revealed the fact that these dikes had not at that time accomplished the desired channel changes.
