Preface: The jet-blast tests described herein were authorized by the Office, Chief of Engineers, in Supplement No. 2 to Addendum No. 3 to "Instructions and Outline for Effect on Airfield Pavements of Rocket and Jet Motor Exhausts and Fuels," dated March 1953· The tests were conducted at Presque Isle Air Force Base, Maine, in April 1953 by the Flexible Pavement Laboratory of the Waterways Experiment Station in cooperation with the U. S. Air Force. The program was planned by Headquarters USAF, the Airfields Branch of the Office, Chief of Engineers, and the Flexible Pavement Laboratory of the Waterways Experiment Station. Messrs. E. C. Meredith and J. D. Garnett of the Flexible Pavement Laboratory placed instruments in the test pavements- and conducted the tests, and Mr. Meredith prepared this report. The Eastern Air Command of the USAF furnished the ground crews, two jet planes, and accessory equipment. The cooperation given by Base Operations at Presque Isle Air Force Base is specifically acknowledged in view of the fact tr.at the runway on which the tests were conducted was kept active most of the time. The temperature recorder used in the tests was obtained from Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., on a loan basis. Observers present during the testing period included Lt. Colonel Bob Clifford and Mr. John Burton of Headquarters USAF; Mr. Ralph Strong of the New England Division Laboratories, Corps of Engineers; and Mr. Chris Seibel, Jr., of the Flintkote Company, producer of one of the tar-rubber materials used in the pavement.
