Preface: The geological investigation of gravel deposits in the Lower Mississippi Valley and adjacent uplands was authorized in first endorsement, dated 12 April 1944, by the Chief of Engineers to letter, dated 4 April 1944, from the President, Mississippi River Commission, to the Chief of Engineers, U. S. Army. The field work for the investigation was accomplished under the general supervision of Dr. H. N. Fisk, consultant, by personnel of the Geology Branch, Soils Division, Waterways Experiment Station. H. N. Fisk and R. J. LeBlanc were in immediate charge of the field work and preparation of data. The latter was accomplished largely by P. R. Mabrey. This report was drafted by E. L. Krinitzsky under the general direction of. A. Osanik and W. J. Turnbull.
