Description: Technical memorandum
Introduction: This memorandum constitutes a report on the investigation made to determine the minimum grain size of filter materials required to prevent (a) infiltration of fines into the filter material; (b) infiltration of filter material into various types of commercial under-drain pipes. The report covers the tests which have been carried out at the U. S. Waterways Experiment Station to verify the results of previous investigations, and to secure additional information applicable to designs of under-drainage systems with various commercial types of drain pipe. The testing program was divided into two parts, (a) laboratory tests in pyralin permeameters, and (b) outdoor tests in a 36-ft flume using full-size lengths of 6-in. diameter under-drain pipes.
