Technical memorandum-
Syllabus: This memorandum constitutes a final report of the study performed at the U. S. Waterways Experiment Station on a model of the spillway for the Wappapello Dam. The model was built undistorted to the linear scale ratio, model-to-prototype, of 1 to 100. The general purpose of the model study was to investigate conditions resulting from the operation of the spillway of basic design, and to develop means of correcting any uneconomic, unsafe, or undesirable conditions found to exist. The results of the study indicated the following: a. A pilot channel cut into the underlying rock of the nose below the spillway provided the most effective means of carrying spillway flow away from the dam. b. A dike between the exit channels of the spillway and outlet works confined all flow at high spillway discharges to the spillway exit channel. The consequent occlusion of lateral flow from the spillway exit channel minimized shoaling of the outlet works exit channel, prevented erosion of the dike along the left bank of the outlet-works exit channel, and materially reduced the velocity of eddy currents along the toe of the dam. c. The dike along the left bank of the outlet-works exit channel, raised to El. 358 mid protected by riprap at its extreme eastern end, concentrated flow from the outlet works in such manner as to insure the development of a channel across the delta of debris deposited in the river channel by spillway flow.-
