Preface: The investigation reported herein was authorized by the Office, Chief of Engineers, in a letter to the Director, Waterways Experiment Station, dated 11 December 1950, subject, "Landing Mat Test." The tests were conducted by the Waterways Experiment Station in accordance with Plan of Test for "Comparative Engineering Traffic Test of 10-, 11-, and 12-gage Steel Landing Mat," dated September 1951, as a part of project No. 8-69-04-004, "Criteria for Designing Runways Surfaced with Landing Mats." Engineers of the Waterways Experiment Station actively concerned with the planning, testing, analysis, and report phases of the study were Messrs. W. J. Turnbull, C. R. Foster, O. B. Ray, C. D. Burns, B. G. Schreiner, and A. B. Thompson. This report was prepared by Mr. Thompson.
