Description: Technical memorandum
General: This memorandum is a report of the investigation of underseepage at seven levee sites in the Mississippi River levee system, made to determine the causes of sand boils experienced at those sites during past floods. Prior investigations, not concerned primarily with seepage, showed that the character of the foundation in areas of excessive underseepage differed but little from that in areas of no serious underseepage. Hence, it was thought that during higher floods many areas exhibiting no serious underseepage effects in the past might become areas of serious seepage; and that seepage in those areas of serious sand boil trouble might become even more dangerous.
