Purpose: The purpose of these tests was to determine: a. Whether the integral locking lugs shown on U. S. Army Drawing D 2114-1A and D 4740-1A are satisfactory substitutes for spring clips as locking devices on steel and aluminum allow pierced plank airplane landing mat, respectively. b. Whether the integral locking lugs on the improved aluminum alloy pierced plank airplane landing mat as shown on U.S. Army Drawing 4740-1, revised 5 June 1944, are more satisfactory than those on the original aluminum allow mat shown on U. S. Army Drawing D 4740-1A. c. The minimum number of integral locking lugs required on each pierced plank to assure service equivalent to that rendered by planks locked with four spring clips.
