Preface: Investigation of the shapes of entrances to conduits of rectangular cross section was authorized by the Office, Chief of Engineers, on 6 January 1948, as part of the Civil Works Investigation program. The tests reported herein constitute the first phase of work to be accomplished under Item CW 802, Conduit Intake Model Tests, and concern entrance shapes of rectangular conduits in which the entrance was flared in four directions. Tests of entrances flared in three directions and in one direction will be the subjects of future reports. All tests were conducted at the Waterways Experiment Station under the general direction of and in cooperation with engineers of the Office, Chief of Engineers.
