Abstract: Syllabus: This memorandum describes the results of an investigation conducted by the Soil Mechanics Division of the U. S. Waterways Experiment Station to determine the cause of the failure of, and to develop new design for, a unit of the levee along the west bank of the Mississippi River near Mellwood, Arkansas. Mobile rotary drilling equipment was used by field forces of the Experiment Station to accomplish the exploration and sampling. Representative samples from the site were subject to test in the soils laboratory. From the results of the .exploration and the laboratory tests, failure of the levee is found to be due to over-stressing of the weak foundation medium. It is determined that a stable section under the present conditions would be infeasible, and the now design reported herein is based upon the fact that the foundation medium will develop strength with time
