dc.descriptionForeword: The hydraulic model investigations reported herein were authorized by the Chief of Engineers in the second indorsement, dated 2 November 1960, to a request dated 20 October 1960 from the U. S. Army Engineer District, Mobile. The investigations were accomplished in the Hydraulics Division of the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways- Experiment Station ('WES) during the period 30 November 1960 to 21 December 1962, by Messrs. J. H. Ables, Jr., Tasso Schmidgall, N. R. Oswalt, and H. H. Allen, under the general supervision of Mr. E. P. Fortson, Jr., Chief of the Hydraulics Division, and Mr. F. R. Brown, Chief of the Hydrodynamics Branch, and under the direct supervision of Mr. T. E. Murphy, Chief of the Structures Section. This report was prepared by Mr. Murphy with the assistance of Mr. Ables. During the course of the investigations the models were demonstrated for Messrs. J. H. Douma, G. D. Smith, and J. P. Davis of the Office, Chief of Engineers; Messrs. c. P. Lindner, L. G. Leach, and A. J. Nault of the U. S. Army Engineer Division, South Atlantic; and Mr. M. E. Nelson of the U. S. Army Engineer District, St. Paul. Representatives of the Mobile District who visited the Waterways Experiment Station to observe the operation of the models and who coordinated the test results and design of the prototype were Messrs. G. w. Gaines, F. F. Escoffier, A. w. Kerr, A. M. Cronenberg, G. p, Collier, F. N. Ricks, J. R. Couey, L. M. Fahey, and A. F. Baer. Directors of the WES during the test program and preparation of this report were Col. Edmund H. Lang, CE, Col. Alex G. Sutton, Jr., CE, and Col. John R. Oswalt, Jr., CE. Mr. J. B. Tiffany was Technical Director.-
