Abstract: The site of the Newburgh Locks and Dam, located on the Ohio River 8 miles upstream from the confluence of the Ohio and Green Rivers near Evansville, Indiana, was investigated with regard to liquefaction potential. Cyclic triaxial compression tests were performed on remolded specimens of the foundation material at various densities. A one-dimensional wave-propagation analysis was performed for two typical soil profiles under the fixed-weir portion of the structure. As a result of this analysis, it is recommended that a study be initiated to determine the cost and benefits of: (A.) removing the top 20 ft of sand below and downstream of the toe of the rock berm and replacing this material with nonliquefiable material; (B.) extending the existing rock berm in the downstream direction. It is believed that such modifications might render the structure stable under earthquake excitation.-
