Description: | Miscellaneous Paper Abstract: The purpose of this report is to present the results of an investigation conducted at Amedee Army Airfield (AAAF) in May and October 1970. An unusual problem occurred in the bituminous overlay pavement on the airfield, and this investigation was conducted to determine the cause of and possible remedies to this problem. The bituminous overlay was placed on the runway in the fall of 1969, and in the spring of 1970 dome-shaped upheavals about 1 ft in diameter and up to 1-1/2 in. high with star-shaped cracks on top occurred in the runway surface. A number of these dome-shaped bulges were sawed out of the pavement, and tests were made on the materials. Results of these tests are reported herein. A layout of the airfield with pavement sections is shown in plate 1. NOTE: This file is large. Allow your browser several minutes to download the file. |
