Abstract: This report summarizes site investigation work conducted at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) and at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, in order to locate a uniform soil deposit in which initial propagation experiments can be conducted. Two potential sites for the conduct of ground motion propagation experiments have been investigated through the use of conventional and specialized exploration and evaluation techniques. A site at WES was investigated to a depth of 125 ft by using the standard split- spoon method and by examining Shelby tube and core barrel samples to a depth of 130 ft. The standard penetration resistance of soil versus depth was determined with the split-spoon sampler, and the penetration pressure versus depth was determined with the Shelby tube sampler. The results of the boring program indicate an inconsistent variation in the penetration values with depth at the WES site. Laboratory techniques were employed to measure the elastic characteristics of the soil samples recovered with the Shelby tubes. Elastic moduli generally increased with depth of sample, but point-to-point variations often contradicted this general trend. Surface vibrations were measured at various distances and azimuths from a steady-state ground vibrator. The surface motion amplitudes were asymmetric and indicative of nonuniform soil conditions. Based on these evidences of heterogeneity, the WES site was adjudged unsuitable for the contemplated studies. Investigation of the WES site was conducted between 1 January 1966 and 1 January 1967. A second site, at Eglin Field, Florida, was also investigated in a similar, but more complete, manner. Three exploration holes were bored, two with a standard split-spoon sampler and one with a Shelby tube sampler. All holes extended to a depth of 60 ft. Grain-size distribution and in situ density determinations were made on the extracted Shelby tube samples. Surface vibration tests similar to those conducted at the WES site indicated that the Eglin site materials are more uniform than those encountered at the WES site. These site studies were conducted between 1 January 1967 and 1 January 1968. Twenty soundings with a Dutch friction cone penetrometer reached to depths of 62 to 102 ft and did not detect the occurrence of clay or marl lenses. Penetrometer investigations were conducted between 1 March 1969 and 1 October 1969. Based on the results of the site explorations, it appears that the Eglin site is more desirable for elementary ground motion studies than the WES site.
