The Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) was created in 1986. The laboratory was initially an attempt to consolidate Information Technology functions at the U.S. Army Waterways Experiment Station (WES) in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Several organizations, such as the Automated Data Processing Center, the Visual Production Center, and the Waterways Experiment Station Technical Library, among others, were consolidated in the organization. Over time, the laboratory evolved into a premier organization for providing information processing and information systems to the nation. ITL is still based in Vicksburg, Mississippi, at what is now the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and focuses on research in high-performance computing and networking, software engineering and informatics, information science and knowledge management, and computational science and engineering.
