The Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is a United States Army Corps of Engineers research and development organization created in 1999 from the consolidation of seven pre-existing Corps laboratories: The Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory, the Environmental Laboratory, the Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory, the Information Technology Laboratory, the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, and the Topographic Engineering Center. The consolidation was undertaken in hopes of gaining efficiency and savings from a more compact research organization. The main campus of ERDC is the grounds of the former U.S. Army Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, Mississippi, with many affiliated locations also hosting ERDC facilities. The most notable of these affiliated locations are Champaign, Illinois (home of the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory), Hanover, New Hampshire (Home of the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory), and Alexandria, Virginia (Home of the Geospatial Research Laboratory, the Topographic Engineering Center’s successor).
