Abstract: The Red River between miles 68.6 and 79.2 was selected as a typical troublesome reach in which to determine the general channel realignment, training, and stabilization structures necessary to provide a navigation channel of adequate depth and width that would be stable and require minimum dredging. The movable-bed model was built to a horizontal scale of 1:150 and a vertical scale of 1:100. The following conclusions were indicated by the model investigation: (A.) The natural channel of the Red River and typical cross sections proposed for cutoffs were too wide to provide adequate navigation channel depths without contraction and stabilization structures. (B.) Considerably more length of dike was required to maintain an adequate navigation channel when the existing river alignment was followed than when an improved channel alignment was used. (C.) Preservation of old bendways created by channel realignment was substantially improved by a closure of the upper end to top bank elevation and the construction of structures designed to block movement of sediment-carrying bottom currents entering the lower end of the channel.
