Description: | Technical Report Abstract: This report reviews available literature on concrete paving blocks and describes an accelerated traffic test of three paving block test items conducted at the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. This in formation is analyzed to develop recommendations on specifications and design methods for block pavements for use by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. In general concrete block pavements behave as flexible pavements, and designs may be developed from modifications to existing flexible pavement design methods. Because of the superior load distributing characteristics of block pavements in comparison to conventional asphaltic concrete surfaces, these designs will be conservative. Both rectangular and shaped, interlocking blocks may be used in pavements. Concrete block pavements are acceptable as low speed road and industrial surfacings, are capable of supporting heavy and abrasive loads, require little maintenance, and offer easy subsurface access for utility repair or corrections for settlement. |
