Description: | Special Report Abstract: A major construction effort is needed at DEW Line Ice Cap Station DYE-2 to extend its useful life to 1986. That work should be done as soon as possible because the truss enclosure is deteriorating rapidly. Although a 210-ft sideways move as was accomplished at DYE-3 in 1977 is technically feasible, the alternative of backfilling the truss enclosure with ice is expected to cost about $2.7 million less. Unless there is a strong possibility that DYE-2 will be needed for many years beyond 1986, the ice backfill alternative is recommended. |
