Description: Special Report
Abstract: An experiment was performed to determine the rate of equilibration of deuterium between the ice and liquid phases of water in partially frozen soil. The results of this experiment are consistent with a diffusion rate of deuterium in ice of 1 or 2x10(-10) cm(2)/s. A method for calculating the approximate equilibration time, given the size of the ice crystals in the system, is provided. This calculation compares well with the experimental results. Note: (-10) is an exponent for scientific notation. (2) indicates cm is squared.
