Description: Special Report
From the Preface: This report contains abstracts and summary papers of presentations made at a workshop in Golden, Colorado, 22-23 October 1984. The workshop was organized in response to recommendations contained in a 1983 report by the Committee on Permafrost of the National Research Council. The report, entitled "Permafrost Research: An Assessment of Future Needs," lists as its top priority the need to improve methods for detecting ground ice and mapping critical permafrost parameters. Geophysics offers techniques to improve our understanding of permafrost and ground ice distribution. Appendix B is the chapter on Exploration Geophysics from the Research Council report which presents details of current work and future requirements. The workshop was an informal gathering of active researchers and engineers and observers from Canada and the United States. Abstracts of current work were solicited and were due one month prior to the workshop. This deadline provided the opportunity for inclusion of the most recent field observations. Following the workshop, authors were given the opportunity to revise their abstracts and provide additional illustrations. In several cases full-length papers were submitted. No technical review of these abstracts or summary papers was made, and the information contained in them is the responsibility of the authors.
