Foreword: This paper was prepared for presentation at the Tenth Symposium of Rock Mechanics sponsored by the Intersociety Committee on Rock Mechanics, May 20-22, 1968 at Austin, Tex. The work reported was conducted at the Concrete Division of the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) under the sponsorship of the Defense Atomic Support Agency (DASA), Nuclear Weapons Effects Research Program A3a, Subtask 13.191A, as authorized by DASA MIPR 503-66. The work was conducted during the period from October 1965 through October 1967, and was under the direction of Messrs. Thomas B. Kennedy, former Chief of the Concrete Division, WES, and Bryant Mather, present Chief of the Concrete Division. The investigation was under the supervision of Messrs. J. M. Polatty, Project Officer, W. O. Tynes, and R. L. Stowe. Mr. Stowe was project leader and prepared this report, assisted by Mr. D. L. Ainsworth. Directors of WES during the conduct of this study and the preparation of this paper were COL John R. Oswalt, Jr., CE, and COL Levi A. Brown, CE. Mr. J. B. Tiffany was Technical Director.
