Foreword: This paper was prepared at the request of Dr. Bruce E. Foster, Chairman, Ad Hoc Committee on Effect of Temperature on Concrete of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) for inclusion in the Proceedings of the Symposium on the Effect of Temperature on Concrete, which will be held at the ACI Convention in Memphis, Tennessee, November 1968. The paper was approved for publication by the Office, Chief of Engineers (OCE). The manuscript was based on the results of an investigation sponsored by the OCE as reported in U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) Miscellaneous Paper No. 6-123, Report 15, Temperature Rise of Mass Concrete Mixtures. Directors of the WES during the investigation and preparation of this paper were COL Alex G. Sutton, Jr., CE, COL John R. Oswalt, Jr., CE, and COL.Levi A. Brown, CE. Mr. J. B. Tiffany was Technical Director.
