Abstract: The New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam was built in 1937. The concrete now shows substantial cracking. Tests were conducted to determine if alkali-silica reaction has occurred. Some calcium sulfoaluminate was seen in cracks and on broken core surfaces, but the amount appeared to be normal. Although the concrete was not air-entrained, its appearance and physical condition did not indicate that any significant frost damage had occurred. It is believed that much or all of the cracking seen in this structure is due to the alkali-silica reaction.
