Foreword: This investigation was sponsored by the U. S. Army Research Office- Durham beginning in January 1965. It was designated ARO-D Proposal No.: I-440-MC, DA Project No.: 20014501B32D, Intrinsic Studies of Materials. The work was done in the Petrography and X-Ray Section and in the Chemistry and Plastics Section, Engineering Sciences Branch, Concrete Division, U. S. Army Engineers Waterways Experiment Station (WES), under the supervision of Messrs. Thomas B. Kennedy, Bryant Mather, and R. V. Tye. The Chief Investigator was Mrs. Katharine Mather, who prepared this report. Others who participated in the study included: Mrs. Clara F. Derrington, Messrs. B. D. Ainsworth, w. I. Luke, John Hetrick, and Tonnny Ray, WES Directors of the 'WES during the investigation and preparation of the report were COL John R. Oswalt, Jr., CE; COL Levi A. Brown, CE; and COL Ernest D. Peixotto, CE. Technical Directors were Messrs. Jo B. Tiffany and F. R. Brown.
