Abstract: Airblast attenuation through entranceways into structural components was investigated in a small-scale explosive test series during 1983. Thirty tests were performed with steel constructed models of square cross-section tunnels in configurations typically found in field fortifications and personnel shelters. Model structures included tunnels with 15 cm and 30 cm entrance widths and 42 and 17 tunnel diameters long, respectively, blast shields in front of tunnel entrances, and abrupt expansions in entranceways. Spherical charges ranging from 113 to 907 grams were detonated outside the tunnel entrances in end-on and side-on geometries. Airblast measurements were made at various positions along the tunnel walls. Pressure-time histories with corresponding integrated impulse histories and tabulated peak values are presented. Plots of pressure versus scaled distance are presented, along with comparisons of data from previous tests of the airblast penetration program which investigated airblast attenuation in tunnels of round cross-section.
