Abstract: This report represents a field investigation of a neoprene pad capping system (NPCS) that is marketed as an alternative to the capping materials referred to in CRD-C 29 (ASTM C 617), Standard Practice for Capping Cylindrical Concrete Specimens. The NPCS consists of reusable neoprene pads in steel retainer caps. The results indicate that within the range of 500 to 5,500 psi, the NPCS appears to be an acceptable alternative to sulfur-mortar caps for testing the compressive strength of 6-in.-diameter by 12-in.-high cylindrical concrete specimens. The NPCS also eliminates a potential safety hazard resulting from working with the sulfur mortar and could constitute a substantial cost savings.
