Description: Miscellaneous Paper
Abstract: Prototype tests were conducted to determine the fastest permissible single-valve lock chamber filling (and emptying) that could be tolerated without exceeding the generally accepted maximum load per hawser of 5 tons. A number of filling valve openings were used while hawser loads and other phenomena were measured. As a result, initial filling valve opening of 3.4 ft (20 sec) was recommended. No restrictions on the emptying valve opening were found to be necessary.
