Abstract: A numerical model developed by Tetra Tech, Inc., which traces the movement of dredged material disposed in the aquatic environment has been employed at 10 proposed ocean disposal sites in the Hawaiian Islands. The primary objective of the model applications was to provide a qualitative description of the behavior of the disposed material with a corresponding estimate of how much of the material reaches the bottom of each of the 1000-yd-radius disposal sites. In addition to model results, a brief description of the numerical model and the rationale for selection of the basic input data at the Pacific Ocean disposal sites are presented. Results from the study indicate that for the particular input data used, at most of the sites the majority of the material will leave the disposal site as suspended sediment rather than being deposited on the bottom.
