Description: Technical Report
Abstract: This report documents a geomorphic study of a 5-km reach of Bakers Bayou, near Lonoke, AR. The purpose of the study was to determine the historic limits of the channel fill and the width of the prehistoric bayou, a former Arkansas River course. An integrated study was conducted involving historic data, geomorphology, soil stratigraphy, geophysics, and radiometric dating methods. Results of the study indicate that the area evaluated was an active Arkansas River course between 6,000 and 8,000 years before the present, and the maximum channel width was between 600 and 900 ft. The channel by 1850 at the area studied was between 66 and 231 ft wide and was tree filled with shallow standing water and no clear-cut main channel.
