dc.descriptionAbstract: Cone penetrometers are used in expedited site investigations to penetrate the subsurface for data collection or sampling efforts. Each penetration leaves a vertical conduit for potential contaminant transfer and is typically required to be sealed with an acceptable grouting material. Several methods are used for sealing penetrometer holes. This research effort was undertaken to evaluate penetrometer rod retraction grouting through an expendable tip. Grout was injected at three different sites, allowed to cure in situ, and was then removed using a drill rig. The evaluation results indicated the adequacy of the grout seals, and specific recommendations are made for improvements in the current grouting system.-
