Description: | Miscellaneous Paper Abstract: Site investigations for nuclear power plants are necessary to determine the geotechnical conditions that affect the design, cost, performance, and safety of the plants. Major considerations for analysis and design include the bearing capacity of foundation materials, the total and differential settlements of structures under static and earthquake loading conditions, the stability of cuts and slopes in soil and rock under static and earthquake loading conditions, the propagation of earthquake-induced motions through underlying deposits, and the potential for liquefaction of soils. The stability of foundations during construction must also be assured. The purpose of the proposed guidelines is to describe programs of geological and engineering site investigations that would be adequate to evaluate the safety of the site and to provide the parameters needed for engineering analysis and design of foundations and earthworks. General requirements for site investigations are discussed. Methods of subsurface investigation, including their applicability, limitations, and pitfalls, are described. Proposed rules for spacing and depth of subsurface exploration for various kinds of seismic Category I structures are given. |
