Abstract: High strength geotextiles have allowed construction of embankments on soft soil foundations that will not support a man walking or support of conventional construction equipment. High strength geotextiles coupled with plastic strip drains have virtually eliminated the use of sand drains in the consolidation of soft clay deposits. This report describes a number of case histories of geotextile fabric-reinforced embankments constructed on very soft foundations in both Europe and the United States. The fabric-reinforcement philosophy for embankment design and construction deyeloped by the US Army Corps of Engineers is presented in this report. Use of the design and construction techniques and methodology described in this report represent the latest state of the art for geotextile fabric-reinforced embankment constructed on soft foundations.-
