Abstract

This technical note is a product of the Ecosystem Management and Restoration Research Program (EMRRP) work unit titled “Natural Resource Inventories for Special Status Species on Corps Operating Projects.” The objective of the work unit is to provide guidelines for conducting Level I and II inventories on Corps projects (Martin et al. 2006). The emphasis is on methods that apply to a variety of animals rather than single species. The recent focus on ecosystem management and inclusion of nongame species in management plans has provided opportunities to improve the management of natural resources for many of the non-game forest, grassland, and aquatic birds. The purpose of this technical note is to: (1) provide an overview of the importance of monitoring avian communities on Corps projects (Figure 1), (2) identify important avian research and monitoring objectives that will benefit the management of Corps lands, (3) outline and describe specific methods for surveying terrestrial and open-water bird communities under a variety of habitat conditions, and (4) list examples of ongoing avian monitoring programs on Corps project lands.
